Un caffè con: Criss Korey
Criss Korey, Milanese, classe 1987, dj e producer fresco di uscita per Salted Music: un artista che sta costantemente acquisendo consensi e raccogliendo piccole grandi soddisfazioni. Capace di mantenere una sua identità sonora ben precisa, il giovane italiano ha le carte in regola per fare bene in futuro, e noi abbiamo deciso di conoscerlo meglio con queste cinque domande, giusto il tempo di un caffè!
Il tuo percorso come dj e producer parte molti anni fa e vede molti momenti positivi. Raccontaci tu quali sono le tappe che riconosci come fondamentali nel tuo percorso fino ad oggi!
Beh sai, ho iniziato a bazzicare il mondo club dalla parte degli addetti al settore più di dieci anni fa.
In quel periodo, assieme ad un amico di vecchia data, ebbi la fortuna di suonare in quasi tutti i principali locali milanesi e questo mi permise di crescere sotto il punto di vista del djing.
Erano altri tempi e di certo la nightlife italiana, ma non solo, offriva davvero tanto per chi volesse proporre il proprio suono al di fuori delle mura di casa.
La produzione musicale era però un altro tarlo fisso, costante, di pari passo con la mia sfrenata passione per la chitarra elettrica ed acustica, strumenti che tutt’ora amo suonare.
Credo che in questo ambito la voglia di mettersi in gioco faccia davvero la differenza tra un produttore e un altro. Sono inoltre sicuro di aver imparato molto dalle persone che mi hanno circondato negli anni e questo mi ha inevitabilmente formato artisticamente. Poi in mezzo molte altre cose tra cui la produzione radiofonica e diverse collaborazioni con l’ambiente rap milanese.
Un percorso interessante, in cui ti sei lasciato guidare solo dal tuo modo di vivere la musica e le sue influenze: oggi a che punto sei del tuo cammino? Cosa ci puoi raccontare del presente?
Sono in costante movimento, sempre alla ricerca di un suono nuovo, di una tecnica di produzione differente, di un disco innovativo. In cantiere ci sono diversi progetti, tra cui la nascita di una label, ma non voglio scoprirmi troppo…Oggi come oggi la produzione musicale occupa gran parte del mio tempo; allo stesso modo però non posso stare troppo senza mettere un disco in un locale.
Ho sempre ritenuto il contatto con le persone fondamentale per accrescere la voglia di andare avanti e di migliorarsi. Cerco sempre di conciliare la produzione musicale con le performance nei club.
Se dovessi dirti a che punto sono del mio cammino non saprei rispondere…spero all’inizio! (Ride) Non mi precludo nulla! Posso però essere felice (non appagato) di ciò che fino ad ora ho fatto!
La passione per la musica elettronica per molti è un’evoluzione della passione per la black music: capita di frequente di scoprire che il primo vero amore di molti dj e producer è stato il rap, mentre per te la cosa è diversa: quando Criss Korey non ascolta o fa musica elettronica cosa ascolta?
A dire il vero il mio background musicale è piuttosto frastagliato…Mi piace tutto quello che ha un’anima, che suscita un’emozione. Ho un fratello più grande che da piccolo mi faceva ascoltare davvero di tutto, dal metal/punk (generi di cui sono sempre stato un fan) al rap americano o italiano.
Erano i primi anni 90, periodo di gruppi come Otierre e Colle Der Fomento. Periodi di NOFX e Offspring ma anche di Manowar e Pantera. Se indovini da dove viene il nome “Korey” capisci subito cosa ascoltavo (Ride).
Con quella roba mi sono consumato i timpani! Ho sempre ascoltato anche generi come la Drum & Bass o il funk. C’è stato persino un periodo, verso i 15 anni, in cui misi su un gruppo punk-rock con amici di infanzia.
Cambiamo argomento: collaborazioni.
Qual’e stata (o quali) la collaborazione che ad oggi ti ha dato di più, e quali sogni in un futuro non troppo lontano?
Ho collaborato con diversi artisti nel panorama House, si parla chiaramente di underground. Ci sono davvero tanti produttori molto bravi.
Beh posso dirti che a luglio uscirò con un remix per Matt Prehn e Dené Theron su King Street Sounds. E’ stata una collaborazione molto piacevole e loro sono artisti davvero talentuosi! Uscirà presto anche un EP con Loud&Clasiizz, un artista francese che sa davvero il fatto suo!
Con chi vorrei collaborare in futuro? Sono troppi! (Ride) Se ti devo fare un nome in questo momento ti faccio quello di Jimpster. E’ un’istituzione in questo ambiente e io sono sempre stato un suo grande fan. Ma davvero, ti potrei fare tantissimi nomi!
Ultima domanda, forse la più complicata: cosa vorresti vedere sul tuo curriculum da artista tra 5 anni? Quali sono gli obiettivi che vorresti raggiungere?
Vorrei che la mia musica, la passione che metto in quello che faccio arrivasse a più orecchie possibili.
Vorrei semplicemente lasciare qualcosa a chi mi ascolta. Continuare a divertirmi e a divertire, ad emozionarmi e ad emozionare…e poi villa con piscina a Beverly Hills chiaramente! (Ride).

Criss Korey, from Milan, born Cristian Grancagnolo in 1987, is a dj and producer just signed with Salted Music who has recently gained a lot of conenses among the deep house world. The young italian iss capable to maintain his own proper sound identity and he’s got every features needed to be the future in this music business and we were able to reach him with those five questions, just the time for a coffee.
Your dj and producer path started a few years ago and encountered a lot of good and positives moments; tell us which are the steps you recognize as important during your career.
I’ve started entering the world of clubs a few years ago. Thanks to a friend, I had the lucky to be a dj for a lot of important clubs in Milan and that helped me grow a lot. Italian nightlife was different at those times and offered a lot for whoever wanted to emerge with a new or experimental sound.Producing, tho, was another target in my mind, as my incredible passion for electric and classic guitar, two instruments that I love to play as per now in my everyday life. I believe that the true difference among two producer is the will of taking the risk and put yourself in the game without any kind of concern of the people in your same business, and I’m really sure that I’ve learned much from those in the years and that made me grow a lot, artistically speaking; also, another important step which signed my career was the possibility of collaborate with some singers in the Milan rap-game and radio station production.
This is an interesting path leaded by music and her influences: where you are now in this path? What can you tell us of your current present?
I’m constantly growing and searching a new sound, a new technique. I’m working at new projects, also one with an important lable but I don’t want to reveal much. Today music production takes a lot of my time but I cannot avoid to go djing in clubs! I’ve always thought that connections and network with other people is fundamental to grow and get better. If I have to say to you precisely where I am now in my path, I cannot say, I hope at the start of that! I don’t preclude anything for myself and my present and future career.
The love for electronic music is, for a lot of people, the evolution of the love and the passion for the black music; it happens frequently that the real “first love” of a lot of producers was the rap, for you is different: when Criss Korey doesn’t listen to Electronic music, what he’s listening to?
My musical background is very shattered, I love everything’s got a soul, that move an emotion inside the listener. I’ve got an older brother that made me listen to everything in my early years, from metal punk to American and Italian rap; it was more or less the early 90’s where in Italy OTR and Colle Der Fomento were rocking in the rap world, Pantera and NOFX, Manowar and Offspring were at the top of their musical carreers and they were famous in my country as well. If you try to guess where the name “Korey” come from, you can also guess what I was into listening to. With that shit I’ve hurted my ears!!! [laughs] There were also a period, when I was like 15, when I’ve tried to enter and found a punk rock group with some of my best childhood friends.
Let’s change argument here: what about collaborations and featurings? What were or which is the collaboration you rathered and what other you’ve got in the oven for the next future?
I’ve collaborated with a lot of artists among the underground-house panorama; is full of really great producers. I will go out in July with a remix for Matt Prehn e Dené Theron, for “King Street Sound Label”; it was a great featuring and they are very talented artists. Also, an EP with Loud&Clasiizz is coming, a really great French artist. Whom I want to collaborate with in the future? I don’t know! They are too many! Maybe I can tell you Jimpster, which is an institution of this world and I always has been a great fan of him, but I can tell a lot of other names.
Last question, maybe the more complicated: what would you like to see on your artist-resume in the next 5 years. Which are the milestones you would love to reach?
I would love that my music and my passion would reach more ears possible! I would love to leave a legacy. Keep going to have fun and make people have fun, to get emotional and make them emotional and…a crib in Beverly Hills with a big pool!! [laughs].
