Un caffè con: D-Formation
D-Formation è un dj di lungo corso uscito su etichette come Suara, Toolroom, Stereo Productions, Yoshitoshi, e proprietario di Beatfreak Recordings e T U S H Music. Abbiamo fatto quattro chiacchiere con lui sulla sua carriera, sui suoi progetti presenti e su quelli futuri. A voi!
D formation: 25 anni di carriera, tantissimi traguardi raggiunti ed ancora si punta a crescere. Qual’è il prossimo obiettivo?
La verità è che dopo così tanti anni che faccio musica, e dopo così tanti obbiettivi raggiunti, è difficile dire quale sarà il mio prossimo passo. A questo punto, il mio più grande obbiettivo sarà riuscire a dedicarmi a ciò che amo (la musica) per il resto della mia vita, o almeno per molti anni a venire. Uno dei miei obbiettivi a breve termine è quello di portare la mia nuova etichetta T U S H Music tra le top label, e sicuramente continuerò a lavorare con Beatfreak, che è la mia etichetta di punta. In questo 2017 Beatfreak compirà 20 anni, e sto preparando molto sorprese. In aggiunta, continuerò il mio lavoro di producer e dj, con molte collaborazioni importanti e grandi label.
La tua musica ti ha portato in tutto il mondo e ti ha permesso di lavorare con diversi artisti attraverso diverse epoche: cosa e come è cambiato il mondo della musica elettronica da quando hai iniziato?
Beh, la musica è cambiata molto da quando ho iniziato. Immagina, all’inizio suonavo e ascoltavo principalmente funk e hip-hop. Ovviamente non erano gli unici generi che ascoltavo, ma erano senz’altro i principali. La musica si è evoluta molto in tutti questi anni, al momento c’è una tale varietà che è molto difficile definire chiaramente il genere che stiamo ascoltando. La musica è in costante evoluzione, e l’evoluzione porta alla fusione tra i generi. Al momento c’è musica che a me suona vecchia, ma per le nuove generazioni è assolutamente contemporanea. Spero continui così.
Beatfreak Group è la tua creatura: parlaci di lei, e di come fai combaciare la tua carriera di dj, producer, ed owner!
Si, Beatfreak è la mia creatura, e compirà 20 anni quest’anno J. È un momento molto buono per l’etichetta, e per questo dobbiamo “nutrirla” per permetterle di crescere velocemente, e arrivare al top. È grazie ad artisti come Alberto Ruiz, Metodi Hristov, Luigi Rocca, Oscar L, Kintar, Hernan Bass, Joe Red, Made In Riot e tanti altri che Beatfreak si trova a questo punto.
È difficile combinare i compiti richiesti dai diversi ruoli, gestire le label e produrre nuova musica mentre sono costantemente fuori dal mio paese, suonando in giro per il mondo. Teddy, la label manager di Beatfreak è un grande aiuto. Grazie a lei diventa tutto più semplice, ma dobbiamo sempre lavorare molto duramente per fare tutto, e da quando tre mesi fa ho lanciato il mio nuovo progetto, T U S H Music, il lavoro è aumentato. T U S H Music è un’etichetta dedicata a un sound più melodico e underground-progressive, sulla quale abbiamo appena fatto uscire la quarta release, “AUREI Ep”, una mia collaborazione con Steve Slight, con ottimi remix di Audio Junkies e Soulwerk.
Se non ci fosse la musica chi sarebbe Dimas Carbajo?
Hahaha, non lo so. Non riesco nemmeno a immaginare la mia vita senza la musica, non ci ho mai pensat. La mia vita sarà sempre legata alla musica, in un modo o nell’altro.
Tra tutte le esperienze che hai avuto modo di fare, tra club in cui hai suonato e collaborazioni con artisti, di quali hai un buon ricordo particolare?
Beh, ho molti aneddoti di tutti questi anni, buoni e brutti… ahaha. In Giappone ho vissuto momenti molto divertenti… e anche due terremoti e un uragano! Ho avuto weekend distruttivi, come uno che ricordo… avevo tre serate in Nord America, giovedì, venerdì e sabato, ma a causa dei vari ritardi dei voli, non riuscì a suonare a nessuna delle tre. Passai tre giorni interi in aeroporto.
Come dicevo prima, ho anche bei ricordi. Ho potuto visitare molti paesi, e oggi ho molti buoni amici in giro per il mondo, e ho potuto conoscere e apprezzare altri popoli e altre culture, che per me rappresenta il tesoro più grande.

A 25 years lasting and ongoing career, made precious by an incredible numbers of reached goals and still, D Formation aims to grow. Which is your next step?
The truth is that after so many years in music and so many goals achieved, it is difficult to say what my next goal will be. At this point, my biggest goal right now is to be able to dedicate myself to what I love (the music) for the rest of my life or for many years more. But one of my short-term goals is to put my new label T U S H music in the category of the Top Labels and of course continue working with Beatfreak that is my flagship. This 2017 Beatfreak will turn 20 years and I prepare many surprises. In addition, I will continue my work of production and a DJ, with many important collaborations and great labels.
Your music let you travel the world and collaborate with other artists through different times: how much is changed and which direction has taken the electronic music since you’ve started?Well, the music has gone through many changes since I started. Imagine, in my beginning the music I played and basically heard was funky or hip-hop. Of course not only listen to that type of music but mostly. The music has evolved a lot in all these years. At the moment we are at a point where there is so much variety of styles. It’s very difficult to define clearly what style we are listening to. The music is always in a constant evolution and the evolution is fusion too. We can find music right now, which to me sounds totally old, but for the new generation it sounds totally current. But in my opinion, we are living the best moment that has never had the electronic music, and I hope it continues like that.
Beatfreak Group is your “baby”: talk us about it and tell us how you manage to match three different careers as an owner, producer and dj in just one!
Yes, Beatfreak is my baby and my baby will turn 20 years this 2017 :). Beatfreak is in a very good moment right now, that’s why we have to “feed it” to be able to grow soon and arrive at the top. Thanks to artists like Alberto Ruiz, Metodi Hristov, Luigi Rocca, Oscar L, Kintar, Hernan Bass, Joe Red, Made In Riot and many more, Beatfreak is in the moment that it is now.
It’s difficult to combine all these tasks – handle the labels, produce music and be constantly out of my country playing around the world, Teddy a label manager at Beatfreak, is my great help. Thanks to her everything is easier. But of course we have to work very hard to get everything done, even more so when only 3 months ago I started with my new project – T U S H music. T U S H music is a label, dedicated to more melodic style and progressive underground, where we just have released the fourth reference AUREI EP by myself and Steve Slight, which also has great remixes by Audio Junkies and Soulwerk.
Who would be Dimas Carbajo without the music?
Hahaha I don’t know. Even I can’t imagine my life without music, I have never thought about it. I will continue my whole life linked to the music in one way or another.
Among all your experiences from clubs to artists you worked with, do you have any particular and special memories to share with us?
Well, I have many anecdotes in all these years, good, bad and regular hahahah. I have had very funny moments, also 2 earthquakes and a typhoon in Japan. I have had fatal weekends, as a one that I remember – I had 3 gigs in Thursday, Friday and Saturday in North America, but due to the delays of the planes, finally I couldn’t make none of the 3 gigs I’ve had. I’ve spent 3 whole days in the airports.
But as I have mentioned before, I also had very good times. I have been able to enjoy many countries, nowadays I have many good friends around the world and that for me is my greatest treasure – to be able to enjoy and know other cultures and people. 🙂
